Edible Park

Puget Ridge Edible Park (PREP)

Puget Ridge Edible Park’s mission is to increase the availability of locally grown, organic seasonal food for the residents of Puget Ridge neighborhood. The all volunteer effort is converting an existing property of more than 2/3 acre into a community farm. The edible park is completely free to help garden in and harvest from!

In 2010, Puget Ridge neighbors won a grant so that the Seattle Parks Department could acquire the 2/3 acre property at 5265 18th Ave. SW under the Parks and Green Spaces Levy 2010 Opportunity Fund. The City of Seattle approved the acquisition of the land for use as an edible park. Before the plot was acquired, it was a home with a small white house and large backyard overgrown with blackberry bushes. Once the blackberry bushes were removed several fruit trees (apple, plum, and pear) and a large arbor of grapes were discovered.

Plans for the garden include a fire pit for community gatherings, several perennial and annual beds, adding more fruit trees and bushes, and making the park wheelchair-accessible. Our long-term goal is to create a year-round farmers’ market to provide revenue for ongoing maintenance and development of the garden, and to provide a continual source of fresh produce to the community, including winter greens.

There will be updates about the project on this website, Puget Ridge Neighborhood Google Group, and Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/pg/PREPpermaculture).

Come join a work party from March thru October on Thursdays from 4 – 6pm or Sundays from 2 – 4pm. It’s a great opportunity to learn about gardening, help build a community resource, and take home some fresh produce.

Do you accept cash donations to the park? I’d like to make one to the organization. I really appreciate the teaching, community building and food growing you do. PREP is such an asset to your neighborhood and the greater West Seattle area.
I support food banks but the food growing skills you share give us all the knowledge and confidence to try growing our own. I really appreciate all that you do.

Thank you for asking and your support! Yes, PREP does accept cash donations. The best way to donate is in person on Sunday or Thursday afternoon during one of our work parties. On Sundays throughout the summer we also have our farmstand market where all produce if free, but cash donations are also accepted. We also have an annaul online fundraising campaign in November.
